Rikki Wants A Pet

Rikki Wants A Pet is a children’s book about pets, change, promises, and how love sometimes means finding a new way forward.

When Rikki moves to a new neighborhood, everything feels different.

She misses her cousin, feels unsure about her new home, and hopes for a puppy on her birthday. However, when the lease says no pets, her parents take her to ButterflyLand, where she receives a host plant with live caterpillars.

As Rikki cares for her new pets, she discovers the magic of metamorphosis and the butterfly life cycle. In addition, she learns how caring for living creatures can bring unexpected joy.

This interactive Jewish-themed children’s book about pets blends emotion, parenting wisdom, and science education. It includes:

• Real butterfly varieties for readers to spot and count
• Educational science content on metamorphosis and host plants
• A heartwarming community birthday party
• Free “Extend the Story” discussion questions available at libbyhikind.com
• Themes of resilience, change, and finding connection

Perfect for read-alouds, classrooms, homeschool nature units, or any child navigating big feelings or new beginnings.
